Small Wood Stoves for Cabins and Small Homes (Spec-Compared)

For a cabin or small, well-insulated house in a mild to moderate climate, a firebox under about 2 ft³ can often be enough, but actual needs depend on climate, insulation, layout and ceiling height. In smaller spaces, a low minimum output usually matters more than a very high maximum. These three small SBI-built stoves show how much the spec sheets can differ even within one size class.

How to choose among small stoves

  • Low minimum output helps in shoulder seasons and small spaces, so the stove isn’t run smoldering.
  • Clearances decide whether it fits a small room at all. Compare them in each manual.
  • Mobile-home or alcove approval matters for tiny houses and cabins with tight layouts; check the manual for your exact model.
  • Availability: discontinued models may have limited parts support.

Question Why it matters Where to find it
What’s the overall heat output range? The low end decides whether it can burn gently in a small room Spec sheet (certification test data)
What’s the EPA loading volume? Smaller fireboxes mean shorter burns Spec sheet
What are the clearances? Small rooms run out of space fast Label and manual
Is it approved for mobile homes or alcoves? Required for those installs Manual
What log length fits? Small fireboxes need short wood Spec sheet
Is it current? Parts and warranty support Maker’s site

Matching a small stove to a small space

Small spaces lose heat quickly when the stove is out but also overheat quickly when it’s lit. A stove whose minimum tested output is lower than your typical heat need lets you burn cleanly without choking the air down. The Drolet Escape 1500 and Osburn 1700 list a minimum of 9,800 Btu/h; the Enerzone Solution 1.8 lists 10,800 Btu/h, from the figures in the table above. Use the stove sizing calculator to estimate your need on a cold day, and remember that spring and fall need far less.

How we chose

We compared spec sheets and manuals for current and recently sold small stoves, prioritizing a low minimum output, published certification data, clearances that suit small rooms and availability of parts. We did not test any stove, and the list will change as models are discontinued. Prices and availability change; check the maker’s page before buying.

FAQ

Is a small stove cheaper to run?

Not by itself. Running cost depends on how much heat you need and your wood. A stove matched to your need burns more cleanly.

Can I put a small stove in a tiny house or RV?

Only if the manual lists that installation (mobile-home approval, for example) and local rules allow it. Clearances and fresh-air requirements still apply.

Which of these is approved for a mobile home?

Enerzone’s Solution 1.8 manual lists the stove as approved for mobile-home installation and gives a separate mobile-home section, but also lists it as not approved for alcove installation. Mobile-home installs typically add requirements such as an outside combustion-air connection and bolting the stove to the floor, so follow that section line by line. For the Osburn and Drolet models, check the current manual for the exact model number before buying; approvals can differ between versions of the same stove.

Does the Enerzone Solution 1.8 meet the current EPA limit?

Check before you buy. The 2018 Enerzone manual for the EB00002 model lists an average particulate emissions rate of 4.3 g/h (EPA / CSA B415.1-10). Since May 15, 2020, a new stove must meet EPA’s Step 2 limit of 2.0 g/h when tested with crib wood, or 2.5 g/h under the cordwood test method (EPA). A unit sold new today should be listed as Step 2 compliant in EPA’s Certified Wood Heater Database. Look the model up there, and match its certification label to the listing.
