Drolet and Osburn are brands of the same Quebec manufacturer, SBI (Stove Builder International). Drolet lists SBI’s technical-support address (tech@sbi-international.com) on its product pages (Drolet), and Osburn’s manuals and catalog are hosted on SBI’s servers (Osburn catalog). Wood-stove owners often notice that some models from the two brands publish the same firebox numbers. Here is what the spec sheets actually show, and what they don’t.

The firebox dimensions and test results match line for line. (Both makers list 1.86 ft³ overall volume; the listed inside dimensions multiply to about 1.82 ft³, so the volume is presumably measured differently. We report the makers’ figures as published.) Other details differ: the published minimum chimney height, the baffle material, the door and finish options, and the price. Osburn’s own spec page also lists a particulate rate (1.26 g/h) that differs from the 2.4 g/h in its current manual, so check the certification label on the unit you buy.
What matching specs do and don’t tell you
- They do suggest the same core firebox design and test data, so on paper the tested burn time and output figures are comparable.
- They don’t prove the stoves are identical. Clearances, approved installations, chimney requirements, warranty and parts can differ by brand and model. Install each stove only according to its own manual and certification label, in accordance with NFPA 211 and local building codes, and ideally installed or at least inspected by an NFI-certified professional.
- Parts aren’t automatically interchangeable. Order parts by your stove’s exact model number.
Use the finder
Our same-firebox finder lists the published firebox figures for each model we’ve covered and shows which ones match. It only uses spec sheets we’ve read and cited; it doesn’t guess.
Why makers sell sister models
Manufacturers with more than one brand often share core designs across them to cover different dealer networks, price points and finishes. Certification testing is expensive, so a shared firebox may share test data. That’s common across the appliance industry and isn’t a problem in itself. It just means two stoves with different names may burn the same way, while still differing in the details that matter for installation and support.
What to check before choosing between sister models
| Check | Why |
|---|---|
| Certification label | The label on the unit you buy governs clearances and installation |
| Minimum chimney height | The Escape 1500 lists 12 ft; the Osburn 1700 lists 15 ft |
| Baffle material | Affects replacement parts (vermiculite vs C-Cast in this pair) |
| Mobile-home and alcove approval | Required for those installs |
| Warranty | Terms differ by brand |
| Current or discontinued | Affects parts and support |
| Dealer | Installation help and service |
What we don’t know
We haven’t seen a manufacturer statement that these pairs are the same stove, and spec sheets can change between print runs: Osburn’s spec page and its current manual give different particulate figures for the 1700 (1.26 vs 2.4 g/h). Where figures disagree, we report both and point you to the certification label. If you know of a source that clears this up, use our contact page.
How to compare sister models yourself
- Put the two spec sheets side by side.
- Compare firebox dimensions, EPA loading volume, output range and efficiency.
- Then compare what affects your install: clearances, chimney height and type, floor protection, mobile-home or alcove approval.
- Compare price and dealer support last.
